Four Key Decisions When Choosing an Ombre Look

Plan the transition height, contrast, tone direction and details around the face together.

Transition height

Where the colour starts to change defines the character of the look. A transition that begins higher and one concentrated at the ends do not create the same effect. During the consultation, also consider how the transition will look when your hair is tied back or when you change your parting.

Contrast and tone

You can describe the difference between the natural base and lighter sections as low, medium or pronounced contrast. Then discuss whether you want the tone to look warmer, more neutral or cooler. The decision should be considered together with the current base and colour history.

Four decisions

  • The height where the transition begins
  • Contrast between roots and ends
  • The intended tone direction
  • The amount of brightness around the face
